Retailer Carrefour, which also offers services via its app and online platform, has announced that its customers will now be able to check themselves out of stores in a move aimed at reducing queues and speeding up the checkout process.
The announcement was made today by the company’s Kenya Country Manager, Christophe Orcet, who joined the supermarket chain at the beginning of this month.
While Carrefour is the first retailer to introduce this service, it has already been available at its Westgate Mall location for some time.
In the next few months, the self-checkout service will expand to Carrefour’s other branches across the country.
Self-checkout Process
The self-checkout process is straightforward, and those interested can first experience it at the Westgate Carrefour Branch.
It should be noted that the service only works for a maximum of 15 items.
After shopping for items, customers can head to the self-checkout booth, which is branded and easy to identify.
At the booth, shoppers can select a checkout point with a scanner and a display, then press the ‘START’ button to begin scanning their items.
Then, they should scan and set aside items after scanning them to avoid capturing them twice, although an attendant is available at the booth to help with any errors.
After scanning all items, shoppers should press ‘complete’ and choose their payment method.
The retailer accepts a variety of payment methods, including card and mobile money (in this case, M-PESA).
It is also advised to scan the QR code on the screen to earn points if a shopper has registered for MyClub Card.
Items can also pay for items using their loyalty card if they have enough points.
For M-PESA payments, you will be asked to enter your M-PESA number, and a prompt will be sent to their screen for authentication using a PIN.
For cards, you should tap your card at the POS machine on the booth to process payment.
At this stage, you should bag your items and leave.
The self-checkout service is only available for 15 items or fewer and is currently only available at Westgate. Carrefour plans to integrate more tech-based features into its platform in the future, which will be beneficial to customers.
